Word - Black Robe and Time

This is a film that still sticks with me. For me, it is hard to watch a documentary. I can't explain why, that's just how I am. So it is really nice to watch a film with a plot that still shows the important aspects of the interactions between the Christian settlers and the Native Americans. I think my favorite moment of the movie, was Captain Tick Tock. It wasn't a big part of the film but it was just interesting to think about. The notion of time that we know is just a societal construct. It's amazing to think about cultures that don't live their days based off of minutes and hours. They don't measure time like that. These cultures just know daylight and moon light. They do what they need to do during the day. They aren't really controlled by deadlines. They don't think "oh crap I gotta get this done in the next hour." They don't live in a constant state of stress due to time constraints. The comment the Native Americans made in the movie about how the settlers are controlled by Captain Tick Tock who tells them where to go and when is just eye opening. We don't think of clocks as controlling us but they sort of do. We are always looking at clocks on the wall or on our phones to know how much time there is left in class or how long we have to get ready for an event. Such a minor detail from this movie was able to just blow my mind completely and make me think about things from different perspectives. It's just amazing.
